Blood Changes in Experimental Hypo-and Hyperthyroidism (rat)
Á¶ÇÑÀÍ(ðáùÓìÍ)/Han Ik Cho
Abstract
It has been known that the cretin and patients with myxedema are anemic and
hyperthyroidism leads to so called "Kocher's hematological findings" a reduction in
neutrophil and increase in eosinophil and lymphocyte. During the last few decades, there
have been numerous reports on blood changes in experimental hypo-and
hyperthyroidism. However the results were variable. The author attemped an
experimental study for further elucidation of thyroid hormonal effects on blood.
Hypo-and hyperthyroidism conditions were induced by 131I single injection
(4.5§¯C/§¸) and triiodothyronine daily injection (0.5§¶/day) for one month respectively.
Blood samples were collected by heart puncture and tail cutting. Total white blood cell
count, hemoglobin, hematocrit and WBC differential counts were perfomed.
The results are summeriged as follolws.
1. Total white blood cell counts were significantly decreased in both of
triiodothyronine group and 131I group. Triiodothyronine group shows about
a half white blood cell count of control group.
2. Hemoglobin and hematocrit values were significantly decreased in 131I
group.
3. White blood cell differential counts show lymphopenia, neutrophilia and eosinophilia
in both of 131I group and triiodothyronine group. This change is more
pronounced in 131I group.
4. Tail blood exhibits higher values in hemoglobin, hematocrit and white blood cell
counts as compared with heart puncture blood.
It is summerized that hyper-and hypothyroidism induced a leukopenia with
lymphopenia, relative neutrophilia and eosinophilia and hypothyroidism causes an anemia.
